NAA establishes a presence at the Conference of State Legislators Summit for America.

The National Apartment Association (NAA) State & Local Policy Department recently exhibited at the 2002 National Conference of State Legislature's Summit for America, held this year in Denver. The National Conference of State Legislatures--headquartered in Denver--is a bipartisan organization serving legislators and staff. The Summit for America is their annual meeting that brings together state lawmakers and legislative staff to discuss policy and fiscal issues. There were more than 300 organizations exhibiting and more than 5,000 attendees at the summit.

NAA exhibited with the Real Advocacy Group for the States (REAGS), which is a coalition of national real estate trade associations that have an interest in government relations at the state level, The coalition joined together to increase the awareness of the critical issues that are facing the real estate industry. NAA focused on highlighting our response to the threat of terrorism and explaining the impact our industry has on the tax base of the communities they serve. NAA shared with legislators information about their terrorism awareness seminar. New Terror, New Uncertainty, New Direction, and the 2001 Survey of Income and Expenses in Rental Apartment Communities--both available in CD ROM format. Exhibiting at the Summit of America allowed NAA to broaden our contacts with many of the most influential lawmakers in the nation.

Volunteers from the Apartment Association of Colorado Springs, Apartment Association of Metro Denver and the Bay Area Apartment Association assisted NAA staff during the exhibition. REAGS hosted a reception for legislators and staff atop the Quest Communications building in downtown Denver Dozens of state legislators and staff attended the event, including the entire delegation from the Hawaii legislature. The reception was attended by Lauren Brockman, Orion Real Estate Services, President of the Colorado Apartment Association and Jamie Glonek, Director of Government Affairs for the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. Both of these opportunities allowed NAA staff and affiliate staff to develop new relationships with legislators and staff.

Barbara Vassallo, Director of State and Local Policy, presented a program entitled Affordable Housing, What the Future Holds. She outlined how apartments can be integral in developing a balanced housing policy. Vassallo presented with Conrad Egan of the Millennial Housing Commission and Claudia Kedda from the National Association of Home Builders.
