NA committee demands of govt to give subsidy direct to farming community rather than industrialists.

ISLAMABAD, 04 June, 2009 (Frontier Star) -- National Assembly (NA) standing committee on food and agriculture has voiced resentment over disbursement of salaries to the illegally appointed officers in Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and non provision of requisite information to the committee and decided to issue show cause notice to chairman PARC besides directing him to furnish the record of illegal appointments within five days. Committee met here Thursday under chairman Javed Iqbal Warriach. PML-N legislator Rana Tanveer Hussain and MQM legislator Abdul Qadir Khanzada expressed their grave concern over non participation of federal food minister in the committee's meeting. Both of the legislators demanded the minister should resign from his office if he could not attend the meeting. Food ministry replied in this respect that federal minister could not attend the meeting of standing committee due to his participation in the meeting of National Economic Council. Committee also voiced its dismay over non availability and smuggling of Urea fertilizer saying government was doing nothing for addressing the problems of farming community. Not to speak of farmers, Urea fertilizer is being provided to members of assembly on recommendations from higher authorities, committee noted. Officials of ministry of food told government was allowing subsidy of Rs 30 billion on Urea fertilizer. Committee said this subsidy should be given directly to the farmers rather than industrialists.
