NA Defence body urges PIA for proper Haj flight operation.

ISLAMABAD -- National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence on Wednesday stressed Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to take necessary steps to perform the Hajj operation 2012 in a befitting manner.

The meeting was held under the Chairpersonship of Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho and was attended by MNAs Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, Shagufta Sadiq, Syed Hamid Saeed Kazami, Begum Ishrat Ashraf, Sheikh Rohale Asghar and Syed Haider Ali Shah.

The Committee was briefed on the budget assumption of PIA for the year 2012 while the salient features of flight operations, capacity and traffic plan and financial projection was also explained on the occasion.

It was informed that new narrow body fuel efficient aircraft are being included in the PIA fleet. The Committee observed that the cash flow is a big problem in PIA as it is sustaining a loss of about Rs 2 billion per month and asked PIA to decrease the cash loss.

The Committee earlier prayed for the departed souls of Bhoja Airline crash and was briefed on the crash of Bhoja Flight 213 of April 20.

It was informed that inquiry/investigation has been ordered and being made in the media by Safety Investigation Board (SIB). It was requested that no speculation may be made prior to the completion of inquiry.

The Members were apprised that Radar was of 94 model and providing perfect services and the pilot joined the Bhoja Airline two months back from Shaheen Airline. The committee stressed that the inquiry should be completed as early as possible and the compensation process may be started urgently. It was also recommended that Ministry of Interior may revisit the FIR lodged at Koral Police Station and the criminal sections should be removed from the FIR.

The Committee was informed that compensation to the 107 deceased of the Air Blue crash has been paid whereas the cases of 34 are under process while the heirs of 4 passengers have refused to file the claim and take compensation.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Director General (CAA), Managing Director (PIA), Director General (Audit) , Directors (Bhoja Airline (Pvt) Ltd), Investigation Incharge (Safety Investigation Board) and other relevant officers from Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance, CAA, Office of the Auditor General of Pakistan and PIA also attended the meeting.
