N.V. KEMA JOINS UL'S GLOBAL QUALITY NETWORK OF REGISTRARS

NORTHBROOK, Ill., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), a leading U.S. quality system Registrar, and N.V. KEMA, a quality system Registrar headquartered in the Netherlands, today announced an agreement which adds N.V. KEMA to UL's global network of quality system Registrars.
"This network enables UL to coordinate registration activities for organizations who want single or multiple registrations to the ISO 9000 Series Standards," explained Bob Levine, UL vice president - follow-up services. "The addition of N.V. KEMA provides yet another option for companies who need multiple registrations in order to do business in today's global marketplace."
The ISO 9000 Standards are an international series of quality management and quality assurance standards developed by the Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The series is a set of five generic quality documents which describe and define the distinctions and interrelationships among quality systems and provide guidelines for selection and use of quality standards.
"For certain product categories, the European Community (EC) requires -- among other conditions -- demonstration of compliance with the ISO 9000 Standards, or other recognized quality standards, as a stipulation for exporting products to the EC," according to Levine. "Even manufacturers not involved with these specific categories are seeking registration because many organizations are requiring that their suppliers comply with the ISO 9000 Standards."
The agreement with N.V. KEMA brings the number of agreements UL has with international quality system registrars to 11. Through this network, companies may obtain multiple registrations by AGA Laboratories, the British Standards Institution (BSI), the Bureau of Commodity Inspection and Quarantine (BCIQ) of Taiwan, JMI Institute of Japan, NSF International, Quality Management Institute (QMI) of Canada, Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research (SISIR), Standards Australia (SA), Standards Institution of Israel (SII), the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), and now, N.V. KEMA.
Since establishing the UL Quality System Registration program in August 1989, UL has registered more than 265 facilities to the ISO 9000 Series Standards. More than 200 facilities have obtained multiple registrations through UL's international quality network.
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for- profit organization that has evaluated products in the interest of public safety since 1894. UL's engineering staff investigates more than 14,000 different product types at offices in Northbrook, Ill. UL has wholly-owned subsidiaries, branches, or representative offices thereof, located in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. N.V. KEMA, headquartered in the Netherlands, has more than 60 years of experience in testing and certification of electrical, electronic, medical, telecommunication, and many more products for thousands of companies in and outside of Europe.
