N.E.T.'S ADAPTIVE ATM EQUIPMENT TO PROVIDE LAN BACKBONE AND SWITCHING FOR AMOCO'S ARIES PROJECT

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Equipment Technologies Inc. (N.E.T.) (NYSE: NWK) was selected by Amoco Corp. (NYSE: AN) as one of the key participants for Amoco's ATM Research and Industrial Enterprise Study (ARIES) project. N.E.T. is one of the companies providing the LAN backbone for the project. The N.E.T.(TM) ADAPTIVE(TM) ATMX(TM) Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switch will provide high-speed LAN backbone and switching functionality for the comprehensive test-bed project.
The ARIES project will demonstrate the deployment of ATM technology within a complex corporate networking environment. The ARIES team will build a working model of Amoco's international telecommunications network featuring ATM as the core technology. The project will include links to traditional networking technologies including Ethernet, FDDI and wide-area networks such as T1 and T3 links.
"The ARIES project will demonstrate the integration of traditional networking technologies with the newest high-speed networking technology -- ATM," said Kurt Bauer, director, marketing for N.E.T.'s ADAPTIVE Division. "Using ATM to transport traditional LAN traffic within the campus and over wide area services underscores the need for Virtual LAN capabilities and effective congestion management in ATM enterprise networks."
The N.E.T. ADAPTIVE ATMX will provide the LAN switching functionality to handle traffic from workstations, routers and hubs from some of the leading companies in the industry. The project highlights interconnectivity of multiple vendors demonstrating the power of standards-based equipment and systems.
N.E.T.'s ATMX products offer a unique feature, called Virtual LAN, that differentiates it from other ATM products. Virtual LAN, a software feature developed by N.E.T.'s ADAPTIVE Division, allows network managers to partition individual stations into Virtual workgroups regardless of the physical location of the workgroup members. It is recognized by many networking experts as one of the most powerful capabilities made possible by ATM technology.
As a founder of the ATM Forum and one of the leading vendors in the ATM marketplace, N.E.T. is committed to providing users with a choice of standards-based, interoperable ATM solutions. N.E.T.'s partnerships with vendors of complementary ATM products, such as National Semiconductor, Interphase, TransSwitch, Ericsson AB and Retix, will ensure that users have readily available products to meet their networking needs.
N.E.T., headquartered in Redwood City, is a leading developer and supplier of enterprise networking products with customers in more than 50 countries around the world.
