N.C. MANUFACTURED HOME SHIPMENTS UP 26 PERCENT; STATE RANKS NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- North Carolina's manufactured housing industry has reported its best year since 1987. Shipments, which equate closely to actual sales, totaled 19,985 homes in 1992, an increase of 26 percent over the previous year.
Production was also up sharply in 1992. North Carolina's 23 manufactured housing plants produced 24,261 homes, an increase of 23 percent for the year.
According to the North Carolina Manufactured Housing Institute (NCMHI), the figures confirm the feeling of most in the industry that manufactured housing has recovered from the recession. "We've been through a tough period, but it appears the worst is over and we can look forward to another good year in '93," commented B.J. Williams of Fleetwood Homes in Roxboro, president of NCMHI. Williams added that he attributes much of the rebound to a growing public recognition and acceptance of today's manufactured housing as a viable housing option.
North Carolina ranks number one in the nation in manufactured home shipments, with Florida second and Georgia third. The state is number two in production, behind Georgia.
Manufactured homes represented 28.9 percent of the single-family building permits in North Carolina in 1992.

/EDITORS NOTE: The term "shipments" refers to the manufactured homes shipped from factories to retail sales centers and private developers in the state. Shipments equate closely to actual home sales, although there is usually a delay of several weeks between the time the home is shipped from the factory and sold to the homeowner. All statistics are from the National Conference of States on Building Codes and Standards, Inc.
