N-VIRO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION TO RECEIVE FIFTH PATENT

TOLEDO, Ohio, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Patent Office will issue a fifth patent for technology developed by N-Viro International Corporation (NASDAQ: NVIC). According to J. Patrick Nicholson, N-Viro's chairman and CEO, the award will be made Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The new patent enhances N-Viro's wastewater sludge treatment process by improving odor control and decreasing processing time for a broad variety of treated and untreated wastewater sludges. The patent also allows the conversion of competitive lime-sterilized sludge products with high levels of soil toxicity to new products, like N-Viro Soil(TM), that may be safely applied to soil as an amendment or used as an agricultural fertilizer.
"Our additional odor-controlling capability is an important feature of this new patent," said Nicholson. "This control, a result of combining admixture absorption and microbial catabolism, will help correct a long-standing weakness of current commercial, yard waste composting operations. This weakness is the strong and unpleasant odor normally created as a by-product during processing."
N-Viro has also recently filed applications for patents to cover a stabilization process and product technology for treating bio-organic sludges such as pharmaceutical fermentation wastes, industrial microbial wastes, paper mill sludges and similar materials.
N-Viro developed and markets patented technology to pasteurize organic wastes and to fixate toxic metals through the use of alkaline by- products generated by "clean air" processes. The N-Viro Process received a President's Environmental/Conservation Challenge Award in 1991 and a first place award from the U.S. EPA for beneficial sludge use.
N-Viro technology is marketed through a system of 11 licensed agents and is currently used by 28 facilities worldwide. N-Viro, headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, recently went public and is traded on the NASDAQ Exchange under the trading symbol NVIC.
