SIMON TAKES ON SPRINGER HE'S starred alongside Hollywood heavyweights Sean Penn and Kiefer Sutherland - but Simon Delaney admits his biggest challenge yet is taking on the role of TV icon Jerry Springer.

Best known for his portrayal of the hapless barrister Michael in Bachelor's Walk, Simon is currently morphing into the tough-talking phenomenon of the 90s - Jerry Springer The Opera.

He told the Irish Daily Mirror yesterday: "It's a tricky one and certainly a challenge.

"Normally if you're playing a part you tend to bring a part of yourself to each character but this is a straight impersonation that I'm doing. I have to do a lot of homework on it.

"I have to get his voice right because there are going to be fans of Springer coming to our show and they want to see Jerry.

"I've been working with a dialogue coach and working on his mannerisms. I want it to be perfect at the end of the day.

"I'm going to London tomorrow to get fitted for my Jerry wig and the glasses, the whole thing.

"Jerry Springer was car-crash TV and the Opera deals with that and why people are so obsessed with fame and being on TV and airing their dirty laundry and more importantly why does Jerry let them? "The first act is effectively the first episode of the show so people who come to see us should know what to expect.

"This isn't the Sound Of Music. It's a warts-and-all look at the people that Jerry had on the show. It's different, it's contemporary, it's outrageous and offensive. It's hilariously funny and bring it on."

The musical caused outrage across the UK in 2005 when it was broadcast on BBC2 and sparked 55,000 complaints and streets protests over its "blasphemous" depictions of God, Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

The Dublin actor said he has never met the US chat show legend but hopes he will attend the Dublin premiere on Halloween night.

Since his lead role as a convict who fools a whole village into thinking he's a visitor from outer space in Zonad, the roles have been coming in thick and fast from the US.

The father of two boys, with another child due in February, recently played a guest lead in the hit series The Good Wife.

He added: "It was fantastic, an amazing crew. I played a solicitor opposite the Eddie Izzard. It went really well and I was nine days filming so hopefully the character will come back.

"That's what I want to do. I've been over and back to the States for the last two years. It's a long road but things have started to happen in a good way.

"In July, I did a new TV show called Touch with Kiefer Sutherland and Danny Glover. Fox have ordered 13 episodes so hopefully my character develops in the season."

Simon revealed This Must Be The Place in which he stars with Sean Penn is being released in the US next month.

u Jerry Springer The Opera, at the Grand Canal Theatre, October 31 to November 5. Tickets on sale.
