My memories are going West!

My memories are going West!

THE West End Cinema in your photograph printed in the Mail on March 12 stood in Suolk Street just above the Matthew Boulton Technical College which you featured in the photograph in the Mail March 6. It belonged to the same organisation which owned the Paramount Cinema in Steelhouse Lane. It was usual for the West End to show the C/lm shown at the Paramount the previous week and after showing at the West End it went out on general release to suburban cinemas.

Referring to the technical college, you printed a letter from Robert Betteridge, dating your photograph of the college as being in 1960. My memory of the college is from 20 years earlier in 1940. I started work for a C/rm of accountants in New Street and had to enroll on courses at the technical college.

e lectures were held at Mason College in Edmund Street and, owing to air raids, they took place on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mason College was, of course, the original seat of Birmingham University before it moved to Edgbaston. e building itself was like a rabbit warren stretching back to Great Charles Street at the back.

e main lecture theatre was huge, having wooden rows of seats rising up two !oors with entrances at the back from the !oors above. I am 90 now so my memories of old Birmingham are many and varied.
