Muthaqaf posts surprise victory.

TWO favourites obliged in three of the cup events at the races in Sakhir yesterday.

Envision and Give Way won the Batelco Broadband Stakes and National Guard Cup respectively while Muthaqaf was a surprise victor in the race for the Nadeem Ashar Ali Cup.

Give Way, owned by Fawzi Abdulla Nass, trained by Fawzi Nass and ridden by Anthony Whelan, beat CrAme Brulee by two-and-half-length to win the National Guard Cup for Group Two locally bred horses which carried a cash prize of BD5,000.

Agencourt was third and Wellington fourth.

Envision, owned by Bauresly Racing Syndicate, trained by Fadhel Al Asfoor and ridden by Nader A Aziz, won the richest race of the day for the Batelco Broadband Stakes for Group Two imported horses which carried a cash prize of BD7,000.

Envision beat Always Ready by three-fourth-length while Prince Forever was third and Handsome Planet fourth.

Muthaqaf scored an upset three-fourth-length victory over Adaleel to win the Nadeem Asghar Ali Cup for imported horses which carried a cash prize of BD2,500.

Storm Sport was third and Yajbill fourth.

There were two upsets in five supporting races as well.

Seeking Star, owned by Kameel A Jalil Al Mallah, trained by Ramzi Al Baqlawa and ridden by Gerald Avranche, scored a shocking one-length victory over Barbary Boy to win the race for imported horses which carried a cash prize of BD2,000.

The Emperor Nero was third and Bunsen Burner fourth.

The other upset victory was scored by Lough Neagh, owned by Britta Tappendorf, trained by Ali Jun and ridden by Gary Hind, when it beat Aathaar by five lengths.

Fender was third and Like A Tigress fourth.

Rabdaan 1343, owned by Al Sakhir, trained by Fadhel Al Asfoor and ridden by Nader A Aziz, lived up to expectations winning the race for Arabian horses.

Rabdaan beat Rabdaan 1279 by a short head while Al Jellaby 1209 was third and Al Hamdaany 1232 fourth.

Calculated Strike, owned by Al Montasir, trained by Alan Smith and ridden by Paul Smith, also obliged beating A Touch of Class by a head to win the race for locally bred horses which carried a cash prize of BD1,700.

Cynamon Stick was third and Falter fourth.

Rad, owned by Al Montasir, trained by Alan Smith and ridden by Paul Smith, beat Polish Phantom by three lengths to win the race for imported horses which carried a cash prize of BD1,300.

Hill of Holly was third and Sun Ship fourth.

2nd race: 1 Calculated Strike (Al Montasir, A Smith, Paul Smith); 2 A Touch of Class (Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, J Naylor, Ali Al Saffar); 3 Cynamon Stick (Shaikh Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Khalifa, A Smith, Gerald Avranche); 4 Falteh (Fawzi Abdulla Nass, Fawzi Nass, Anthony Whelan).

3rd race: 1 Lough Neagh (Britta Tappendorf, Ali Jan, Gary Hind); 2 Aathaar (Rashid A Rahman Al Jassmi, Omar Alnesef, Adnan Jaffar); 3 Fender (Bouresly Racing Syndicate, Fadhel Al Asfoor, Zuhair Majeed); 4 Like A Tigress (Kameel A Jalil Al Mallah, Ramzi Al Baqlawa, Gerald Avranche).

4th race: 1 Seeking Star (Kameel A Jalil Al Mallah, Ramzi Al Baqlawa, Gerald Avranche); 2 Barbary Boy (Hussain Ebrahim Al Afoo, A Kuwaiti, Adnan Jaffar); 3 The Emperor Nero (Hussain Ebrahim Al Afoo, A Kuwaiti, Ali Al Saffar); 4 Bunsen Burner (Noof Mazin Alwannih, Taleb Ali, Hussain Makki).

6th race: 1 Muthaqaf (Fawzi Abdulla Nass, Fawzi Nass, Hussain Makki); 2 Adaleel (Late A Rasool K Darwish, Ali Jan, Hassan Al Saffar); 3 Storm Sport (Hadi Ebrahim Al Afoo, A Kuwaiti, Ali Al Saffar); 4 Yajbill (Fadhel Juma Abdulla, Adel Ahmed, Nader A Aziz).

7th race: 1 Envision (Bouresly Racing Syndicate, Fadhel Al Asfoor, Nader A Aziz); 2 Always Ready (Zahraa Aqeel Almajed, Taleb Ali, Anthony Whelan); 3 Prince Forever (Habib Ebrahim Ramadhan, Bader Al Abed, Gary Hind); 4 Handsome Planet (Hadi Ebrahim Al Afoo, A Kuwaiti, Hassan Al Saffar).
