The South West Area Final of the Rotary Young Musician 2019 took place at the performing arts department at Annan Academy on Thursday, February 14.

There were performances from 11 young musicians, six in the voice section and five in the instrumental.

They were sponsored by rotary clubs in the south west area.

Adjudicators for the evening were Alex McQuiston and Noriko Moffat. Summing up, Alex said it had been a "very interesting evening and a joy to judge".

He said they had to take into account the different stages of development of the young musicians' musical careers before announcing Callum Walton on marimba the winner (sponsored by Rotary Club of Annan) in the instrumental section and John Rodger on piano runner-up (sponsored by Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright).

Catriona Arthur was winner of the voice section (sponsored by Rotary Club of Lockerbie) and Callen Love runner-up (sponsored by Rotary Club of Dumfries). Prizes were presented by past assistant district governor Ian Jess.

They will now go on to the regional final to be held at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh on Sunday, March 10.
