Musical youth leading the way.

EXCITING times were ahead for a group of pupils when this picture from our archive was taken, in July 1978.

A group of Marden Bridge Middle School pupils had successfully auditioned for the country's two leading youth festivals, and preparation for the big day was in full swing. The first one was the York Early Music Festival, for which the group were selected from more than 50 schools to be one of seven.

Twelve pupils from the combined drama and recorder group were taking their supporters to York for the 20-minute programme. The school's head of music and history Mr Reg Chapple said: "They have worked very hard, not only at school but in rehearsals at the Wallsend Arts Centre."

A week later, the six-strong recorder group travelled to London to take part in the National Youth Festival for the second year. "It's quite an honour to be chosen again," said Mr Chapple.
