Musical mix.

When it comes to music, Deborah McDonnell didn't have a choice. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, McDonnell honed her singing skills in her dad's country band while getting an once-in-a-lifetime education at the granddaddy of all outdoor music festivals, Woodstock.

Fast-forward 45 years and The Deborah McDonnell Band is packing them in and knocking them dead with an irresistible blend of contemporary bluegrass, country, folk and rock. In addition to McDonnell, the band features multi-instrumentalist Stu "S2'' Ervin,'' singer-guitarist Steve Smith, stand-up bassist Tim Fiehler and fiddler, mandolin-player, banjo-player and saxophonist John Donahoe, of Boogaloo Swami fame. The Deborah McDonnell Band performs at 8 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Blue Plate Lounge, 661 Main St., Holden. (Craig S. Semon)
