PHEW, what a scorcher! The Eisteddfod is over for another year, and my shameless '80s weather reference in the previous sentence describes both the temperature in Meifod last week and the gigs.

Too many to mention, but a wicked weekend line-up of Jakokoyak, Zabrinski, MC Mabon, MC Saisamundo, Llwybr Llaethog and Pep Le Pew meant that everyone went home with a smile on their faces, not to mention a St Tropez-style tan. Roll on Newport next year. Let's start the petition for the Goldie Lookin' Chain to headline NOW!

The sensible thing to do after the Eisteddfod is detox for a week, but Monday night saw me in the Barfly watching the terribly cool and rather disappointing Zoot Woman, who, in my opinion, were totally upstaged by Cardiff's The Vanities. Most of you know of my '80s fixation and these lot took me right back there!

How do a bunch of early 20-somethings make such fantastic music?! Nirvana-style basslines, keyboards from heaven and a voice that could fill your local Kwik-Save coupled with the ability to write catchy, melodic songs that soar into choruses that you never thought were possible. That's how.

I could list the influences on the band (and did just that on Monday night, much to my mates annoyance), but it's much more fun if you go along and see The Vanities for yourselves. They'll be at Clwb Ifor Bach on August 29, and their single Space Tourist is out soon. Enjoy!
