Music group's victory.

A music group proved it could hit all the right notes by winning a regional event.

The Anchormen Winterguard team of Elland won the junior section at the Midlands competition in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire.

The young members received a standing ovation from the audience when they won four out of five categories.

Their success was particularly sweet as the trophy was their first in four years.

Their show, based on Broadway show music, was written by Tony Lees, a former member of the Anchormen.

The Anchormen are one of the area's oldest musical groups. Over the years the group has evolved from a marching band to a jazz ensemble.

The junior side is thriving, with more members joining.

Director Mick Moss said: "A new constitution will see the introduction of performing arts in music and drama.

"Together with a new percussion ensemble this will give a wider scope and hopefully attract more young people."

The Anchormen meet at the Savage Centre in the centre of Elland from 6.30pm to 8pm on Tuesdays.
