Music Junkie.

ANYONE who's been watching the new series of Pop Idol - which, for all the wrong reasons, is probably the funniest thing on the TV at the moment - will have witnessed the desperation of the majority of the contestants as they await the verdict of Simon Cowell and co. A deciding 'Yes' from him means a place in the final 100, a 'No' usually results in one of two responses, depending on the mental and emotional state of said contestants.

Response 1 - A polite acknowledgement of rejection, coupled with a smile and a slight hint of disappointment. Contestant returns to normal life and becomes minor celebrity in their hometown, does a few pub appearances with accompanying poster announcing them as 'Star of ITV's 'Pop Idol''. We will never remember their name.

Response 2 - A disbelieving denial of the judges' opinion, sometimes combined with crying, pleading and the odd profanity. Contestant refuses to believe that they are not the next Pop Idol and attempts to prove it by bad-mouthing the judges outside the audition room and/or appearing on RI:SE to sing to a non-interested nation of breakfast munchers. We still don't know their name, we just refer to them as 'that mad girl with the ghetto blaster' or 'the one who did Eye Of The Tiger'.

It's got nothing to do with music, it's more like watching a freak show, but one thing's for sure - it's a hell of a lot more entertaining than Fame Academy.
