Music: Evan Dand - Evan's above, he's back!

Byline: DEAN PIPER

O

When you hear the name Evan Dando you may immediately think wild child, mad, Lemonhead. Or recall the list of the women he has reportedly romanced, including Courtney Love, Kylie Minogue, Liv Tyler and Kate Moss. But there's a lot more to him than that.

He has been making records since the mid-'80s, but it was not until the release of 1993's Come On Feel The Lemonheads that he finally became one of the world's favourite pop stars. But the price of fame soon wore thin and Evan grew desperately tired of being a celebrity. Convinced his long locks made him too much of a pin-up, he hacked them off in a fit of rage.

After the Lemonheads eventually split, he went through a period of disorientation. Somehow he was never quite "there" when out in public at a showbiz venue. But he got through this bad patch and came back into the public eye with an acclaimed solo album, Car Button Cloth. Packed with pop, rock and country- flavoured songs that had a tinge of the wacky and oddball about them, the album was a reminder of just why he had achieved celebrity status in the first place.

That was in 1996 and he`s been quiet ever since, so don't miss him on this four-day tour, which takes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and comes to London on Tuesday. Support at this week's gig at Dingwalls in Camden comes from Ben Lee and Ben Kweller.

Tuesday. Dingwalls, Camden Lock, Chalk Farm Road, NW1. Tickets pounds 10. Tel: 020 7267 1577.
