The Labour MP and Better Together campaigner announced on Friday that he was suspending his 100 Towns in 100 Days roadshow to seek police advice about safety measures. The Shadow International Development secretary was pelted by eggs in Kirkcaldy on Thursday. He has also been challenged to fight by protesters.

But he will start his tour again on Tuesday in Edinburgh. Murphy said: "I am not going to be silenced by orchestrated mobs of political opponents." Murphy said trouble had started after Alex Salmond was seen to lose his first TV debate against Alistair Darling.

He said: "We have asked Yes Scotland to back off and we will have wait and see what their official response is." Yes Scotland said: "The eyes of the world are on Scotland and it is vital that everybody - regardless of which side of the debate they are on - helps to show off Scotland at its best."

Salmond said that people were entitled to "peaceful protest" but that throwing eggs was "poor conduct".

His staff had called police earlier this month after his car was tailgated at speed by an angry No voter.
