Municipal elections might be postponed, minister.

Amman, May 31 (Petra)--Minister of Municipal Affairs Maher Abul Samen predicted that the Cabinet will take a decision soon to postpone municipal elections.

Official sources said the Cabinet had discusses points raised by the minister to postpone the elections and take a decision on that next year to avoid social troubles that might affect the elections process as the issue of separating municipalities has not been resolved.

The sources added that the government was also unable to provide necessary funds for the separation process estimated at JD100 million.

According to the sources, the Cabinet will issue a decision next week to postpone the elections for another six months starting from September 14, the end of the period set by the amended municipalities law.

It said postponing the elections does not exempt the government from amending the current municipalities law as it allowed the Cabinet to postpone the elections for only 6 months.
