Mullins proud of Al Boum.

WILLIE MULLINS saluted Al Boum Photo's heroic failure to join the Cheltenham Gold Cup greats.

Successful in 2019 and 2020, the nineyear-old was seeking to become the fifth horse in Cheltenham Festival history alongside fivetime winner Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate to land chasing's blue riband on three occasions.

After watching the 9-4 favourite and Paul Townend (above) finish third behind the Henry de Bromhead-trained pair Minella Indo and A Plus Tard, Mullins said: "Al Boum Photo ran a cracker.

"Paul had him in a good position, he ran a great race and we are very happy and very proud of him.

"He missed the thirdlast and the fifth-last, and the first thing Paul said to me when he got down were that the two fences that won it for him last year cost him this year.

"That's the way it goes."

Townend added: "He wore his heart on his sleeve again ww he's gone down fighting."
