Mukalla residents demand release of local accused of assassination attempt.

Two left dead in confrontations between military and armed men

SANA'A, April 23--Confrontations between the military and armed men in the Dais Al-Mukalla area of Mukalla district, Hadramout, left one soldier and one of the armed men dead on Monday, according to local sources. Two soldiers were wounded during the clashes.

The Yemen Times was unable to reach the Mukalla security manager or other employees of the security department to confirm the figures.

Saleh Bin Shamlool, a resident of Dais Al-Mukalla, told the Yemen Times that the clashes were because of the continued detainment of a Mukalla resident who was arrested 20 days ago and accused of involvement attempting to assassinate a judge.

"Armed groups attempted to shut down banks, government instutions and departmnets in Mukalla to demand the release of [the suspect]," Shamlool said.

Local journalist Hadba Al-Yazidi said 30 armed men blocked roads in the area and threatened to shut down government institutions.
