Robert Mugabe has held a belated celebration to mark his 89th birthday.

The Zimbabwean President delayed proceedings from February 21 as he attended the third Africa-South America summit in Equatorial Guinea.

Thousands of his ZANU-PF party supporters packed into Chipadze stadium in Bindura, 85 kilometers from the capital Harare, to help Mugabe celebrate.

Proceedings got off to an inauspicious start with the traditional balloon ceremony not going according to plan.

When Mugabe took to the podium he peppered his speech with humorous stories from his youth, but also took time to call for peaceful elections.

The highlight of the event like any other birthday was the cake, which was in the shape of the ZANU-PF building.
