Motorola EMBARC Introduces The Know-It-All, An Innovative Wireless Information Sign; New wireless sign provides information and entertainment including up-to-date sports information from ESPN and SportsTicker.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 8, 1995--Motorola EMBARC today announced its new wireless LED sign, The Know-It-All.

The Know-It-All provides businesses with a unique promotional device that provides information-hungry consumers with timely information and entertainment while they are waiting for a service or simply browsing a store.

"Our initial market tests have already shown a huge interest in these wireless signs," said Steve Spiro, general manager of Motorola EMBARC. "Any establishment dealing with the public, from a bank to a retail store to a restaurant or bar could use this type of sign to provide customers with a window on the world while they are waiting in line, shopping or enjoying the ambiance. Not only do the signs reduce perceived waiting time, but they also encourage customers to stay and partake of the goods or services offered," he continued.

The Know-It-All utilizes Motorola EMBARC's satellite-linked Wireless Broadcast Network (WBN) to deliver current news and information. The sign can be programmed, using a hand-held keyboard, to provide customized messages specific to the different establishments in which it is displayed. Since The Know-It-All employs wireless technology to receive the information, it does not require any special wiring or installation and only requires a standard AC outlet to operate. As a further expansion to the alliance announced earlier in the year with ESPN, EMBARC will also be providing ESPN and SportsTicker sports information via the The Know-It-All sign.

The Know-It-All provides a variety of information content depending upon the type of establishment it is displayed in. Information available includes national and world headlines, business and financial news and headlines, as well as entertainment news and sports. The sports information provided by ESPN and SportsTicker includes NHL, NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball and Division I college basketball and football scores and schedules. Sports news and summaries are also available.

"When we first entered into the alliance with Motorola EMBARC we were excited about the potential that Motorola's wireless technology offered us and our customers in distributing our sports information," said Tom Hagopian, general manager, ESPNET. "The Know-It-All sign is another creative way that we can help businesses develop better customer relations, increase business and provide the information and entertainment that suits the public's lifestyle," he continued.

The Know-It-All is currently available by calling EMBARC at 800/905-3776 or through selected distributors. Prices range from $40 to $50 per month for the service and a one time cost between $349 and $2,899 for the sign hardware, depending on the size of the sign chosen by the customer.

The Wireless Broadcast Network (WBN) was developed by EMBARC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Motorola. WBN applies radio paging technology to send data and information to a variety of devices including alphanumeric receivers, computers and LED electronic signs.
