Motorists to fly the flag.

MOTORISTS are to be allowed to display English, Welsh and Scottish flags and symbols on their car number plates, the government has announced.

Regulations are to be changed allowing the Union Jack, Cross of St George, Welsh Dragon or Scottish Saltire to be inserted on the left-hand side of the plate. The abbreviations ENG, SCO, CYM can also be included.

The national symbols can be used to replace the European Union 'circle of stars" and GB logos. However, motorists will still need a separate GB sticker when travelling on the continent.
