Freed (communicative disorders and deaf studies, California State U., Fresno) introduces graduate students and beginning speech-language pathologists to motor speech disorders, emphasizing their neurologic bases and including clinical examples. After a brief historical review of these disorders, chapters detail the motor system, evaluation techniques, and six dysarthrias, as well as mixed dysarthria and apraxia of speech, and their causes, characteristics, assessment, and treatment. This edition emphasizes evidence-based practice, and includes a DVD with videos and case studies of real patients, updates to methods, recent research and references, emphasis on best practices, and new illustrations. The discussion of treating apraxia of speech has been expanded and reorganized to reflect current research, and more treatment information is given on hypokinetic and hyperkinetic dysarthria. Outdated treatment procedures for flaccid dysarthria have been replaced by newer ones.
