Morse Diesel named for Upstate hospital

Morse Diesel has recently been named construction manager for an $11.5 million multi-phase remodeling and new construction assignment at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, New York.

Approximately 34,000-square-feet of the existing 232,000-square-foot hospital will receive extensive renovation; departments involved in this phase of work include emergency, surgery, central sterile and supply, maternity and cardiopulmonary. An existing 1,200 square-foot dining room will also receive a 1,000-square-foot extension. Additions totalling 33,000-square-feet will house in- and out-patient surgery suites, a new lobby, material handling and emergency facilities.

The remodeling work involves a number of challenges, says Jeffrey Kless, Morse Diesel project manager. "Remodeling within an existing hospital requires careful coordination between construction and hospital personnel. Special care must be taken when you are working around ongoing operations like matemity, surgery and emergency." Kless shares that one especially delicate aspect of the remodeling assignment involves the construction of a new one-story surgery addition which will be built above the entrance of an existing ground-floor emergency department.

The new material handling addition will wrap around an existing chiller/boiler plant on three sides. Morse Diesel will also supervise the replacement of new mechanical and electrical equipment in the plant.

Morse Diesel first provided preconstruction consulting and estimating services for the project in January 1991, and has offered numerous cost savings suggestions which have been incorporated into the master plan. These included a reduction of the project's original duration from 30 months to 27 months, and the retention of an existing chiller/boiler plant with the replacement of obsolete equipment (as opposed to demolishing the existing building and constructing an entirely new facility).

The assignment is slated for completion in early 1994.

The project owner is A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, New York. The architect is Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, Albany, New York. Morse Diesel staffers assigned to this project are Thomas Link, senior vice president and project executive, and Jeffrey Kless, project manager.
