More threats than for a very long time; COMMENT.
Byline: PETER CLARKE , EX HEAD OF SCOTLAND YARD'S COUNTER TERRORISM COMMAND
BRITAIN is facing a huge threat from Islamic State - and it's very different to the one al-Qaeda posed 10 years ago.
Then we were looking at networks. There would be a small group of people who would go to Pakistan or Afghanistan for training, return to recruit other people and prepare attacks.
Al-Qaeda used to sanction attacks from a central point. With IS, its leadership has given carte blanche to anybody to launch an attack at any time against any target.
That makes it much harder to prevent as there are no communications. The means of attack have become very unsophisticated as we have seen with Lee Rigby and they have short lead-in times.
We are arresting someone for terror-related crimes every day. That's the most for 15 years apart from just after 9/11 and 7/7. There is more activity than for a long time.
