More is needed than an outright gun ban; VOICE OF THE NORTH.

YOUR correspondent John Gill demands an urgent ban on all guns following the recent murders in Cumbria (Voice of the North, June 7).

This reaction is understandable and, no doubt, will be shared by many others in the wake of such a brutal and insane crime. Unfortunately, despite previous gun legislation, which resulted in Britain having some of the toughest gun laws in the world, armed crime in this country has risen markedly.

Sporting guns, like a fencer's sword or an archer's bow, can be lethal if misused for violent purposes, as indeed can be a chainsaw, axe or speeding car.

The sad fact is, if a nutcase is hell-bent on engaging in wanton acts of mindless violence they will do so, using whatever is at hand.

If we are to try to prevent such tragedies in the future, we should perhaps look to do more than merely ban or restrict the tools and implements criminals use in violent crime.

Remarkably, Switzerland, where almost every household possesses a firearm, is purported to have the lowest crime rate in the world.
