Montauk Light a big hit with Long Islanders

Long Island's own Montauk Light beer has been making some big strides in its home state of New York recently, according to Long Island Brewery Co. President John Black.

In a recent beer tasting competition held by the Long Island Wine Club, Montauk Light took third-place out of 53 entries, Black reported, placing only behind Samuel Adams and Royal Oak Pale Ale.

"My wife and I poured our beer at the event mostly for the experience and for the fun of it, but we never expected these results," said Black. "Even though Coors Light and Montauk Light have the same number of calories (105), that's where the similarity ends since that product didn't even come close to us in the competition."

Sales figures of Montauk Light seem to substantiate the findings of the judges as one distributor reported that Montauk Light is out-selling Samuel Adams beer by a two-to-one ratio.

As sales to Nassau and Suffolk counties continue to flourish, Black announced that he is in the process of expanding distribution of Montauk Light into the five boroughs of New York City.

"We know that our beer is being delivered to various Manhattan bars and clubs by vans via the Hamptons and the connection between those two areas is very natural," Black said. "However, expanding into all five boroughs of New York constitutes a new frontier for us."

Although recent sales results have been encouraging for the Long Island Brewing Co., Black explained that the brewery has "a long way to go before it thinks about crossing the New York border, but if and when it does, (Montauk Light) will carry the good name of Long Island."
