Linux provider MontaVista Software Inc announced on Monday (14 April) the availability of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition to develop and run applications using the Virtex-5 FXT family of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), the new system integration platform from FPGA provider Xilinx.

Developers will reportedly be able to leverage MontaVista's integration and real-time performance to develop applications that utilize the Virtex-5 FXT platform's PowerPC 440 processor blocks, GTX transceivers, and over 190 GMACs of DSP processing performance.

According to the company, the Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT devices feature embedded PowerPC440 processor blocks, high-speed RocketIO GTX transceivers, and dedicated XtremeDSP processing capabilities to offer designers high levels of system integration and performance. Each processor offers integrated 32KB instruction and 32KB data caches, delivering up to 1,100DMIPS at 550MHz. In addition, a new integrated 5x2 cross bar processor interconnect architecture provides simultaneous access to I/O and memory for high system throughput.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition for Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT FPGAs will be available for developers and design teams in Q2 2008. No financial details were disclosed.
