Monster swamp gets a reprieve.

A MYTHICAL Maori monster blamed with causing road deaths near its swamp home has been given a reprieve with plans to change a highway design to safeguard its habitat. Highway agency Transit New Zealand has redesigned the road at a cost of 20,000 New Zealand dollars to add a wall alongside the swamp where local Maori believe the one-eyed taniwha has its lair. The programme was halted when Ngati Naho tribe members told Transit of the mythical creature. They say it lives in the swamp for six months each year. They claimed putting a road through a taniwha's home would have been a major insult to all Maori who believed in the creature. LORD of the Rings star Billy Boyd was today returning to his roots as he visited one of the most deprived housing estates in Scotland.

Boyd, who plays hob bit Pippin in the epic blockbuster, was viewing an exhibition in Easterhouse, Glasgow, which features his achievements. The exhibition by residents takes an imaginative and colourful look at the history of the housing estate from prehistoric times to the present day, including themes such as gangs and local churches. Boyd, a native of Easterhouse, is featured in the section that looks at local heroes.
