Monroe gets state football honors.

Winning a state football title had its privileges for Monroe, which earned Class 2A all-state player and coach of the year honors.

Dragons running back Zach Young was named state offensive player of the year, and his coach, Bill Crowson, was named coach of the year.

Monroe defeated Santiam 36-22 for the state title in November, a game in which Young rushed for 133 yards.

Two of the players who made holes for Young, offensive linemen Keith Saito and Christian Garcia, also earned first-team offensive honors, and Young was also named to the first team as a kicker.

Saito was also a first-team selection on the defensive line and Young earned first-team honors at defensive back. Teammates Parker Wynn and Trent Warden were named to the first team as linebackers.

Oakland punter Andrew Harrington also made the first team.

St. Paul's Justin Herberger was defensive player of the year.

In Class 3A, no local players were named to the first team. Harrisburg placed three players on the second team offense: running back Gabe Knox, wide receiver Will Downs and offensive lineman Wyatt Prater.

Santiam Christian's Kyle Parameter was named Class 3A defensive player of the year, Cascade Christian's Haiden Schaan was offensive player of the year and Cascade Christian's Jon Gettman was coach of the year.

Beavers ranked second in preseason poll

CORVALLIS - Baseball America ranked Oregon State No. 2 in the nation in its preseason college baseball poll, released Tuesday.

The Beavers are ranked behind defending national champion Florida, and Florida State, Arkansas and Texas Tech round out the top five. Oregon State, which reached the College World Series last season, will open its 2018 season on Feb. 16 against New Mexico at Surprise, Ariz.

Two other Pac-12 teams were ranked: Stanford was ninth and UCLA was 13th.

Also Tuesday, Oregon State infielder Nick Madrigal was named a preseason all-American by, his second preseason honor following a similar plaudit from Collegiate Baseball.

Laurent named Pac-12 tennis player of the week

Oregon's Thomas Laurent was named Pac-12 men's tennis player of the week after winning his first match of the season last weekend.

Laurent, ranked sixth nationally, beat Andrei Andrukhou of Georgia State, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles in the Ducks' spring season-opening dual meet victory over the Panthers. He also teamed for a victory with Cormac Clissold at No. 2 doubles.

Clark falls back to 10th at event

GREAT ABACO, Bahamas - Former Oregon golfer Wyndham Clark fell out of the lead during the third round of the Tour's Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on Tuesday at The Abaco Club at Winding Bay.

Clark led after the first and second rounds and entered Tuesday with a one-shot lead.

But after rounds of 66 and 68 to open the tournament, Clark shot an even-par 72 Tuesday and fell into a seven-way tie for 10th place at 206.

Willy Wilcox and Sungjae Im both shot 65 Tuesday, with Wilcox taking the overall lead at 14-under 202. Im is tied with Rhein Gibson and Adam Sevenson at 13-under 203.

Two other golfers are at 12-under 204 and three more golfers are at 11-under 205 entering Wednesday's final round.
