Pupils raised more than pounds 1,500 for Children in Need with a special musical extravaganza and a sponsored silence. Deerness Valley Comprehensive School put on a performance based on elements from Pop Idol, Friends and the musical Fame. The school also got two of the loudest students to take part in a sponsored silence.

A RISE in adult learners achievements in the North East has been recorded by the North East Open College Network. Over 15,000 adults sought confirmation of their achievements through Open College Network certificates in 2002-03 - a 3% rise.
