Money: STRIKE IT RICH.

Hilary Cook, director of investment strategy at Barclays Private Clients, guides us through the maze of financial markets.

THE UK market is going nowhere at the moment and looks set to drift for some time longer. So this might be a good time to spread your wings and invest overseas instead.

A good way to do this is through an investment trust which, like a unit trust, spreads your money across a wide range of shares and industries across the globe. One I like the look of is the Monks Investment Trust managed by Edinburgh-based fund managers Baillie Gifford.

Baillie normally concentrate on firms with good growth prospects. But in the present state of world markets they have switched to more cautious investments such as oil, mining and tobacco.

The fund has a good track record compared with both the FTSE World Index - its benchmark - and similar funds. Worth buying.
