JOHN MONCUR claimed he was head-butted in the incident which led to him being sent off in West Ham's FA Cup third round victory at Macclesfield.

The Hammers were 2-0 ahead when Moncur was hauled from a mass brawl by referee Jeff Winter and shown the red card after the official pointedly twice flourished the yellow card in the midfielder's face.

West Ham, whose first two goals were scored by Jermain Defoe, went on to score again with 10 men through Joe Cole. But it was the flare-up near the end which could cause the Football Association to look again at the match video.

Moncur said: "I was booked twice, head-butted and then sent off in the same incident."

Macclesfield officials were aware it was midfielder Chris Byrne who could be in trouble for the alleged head-butt having viewed the video themselves after the game.

Moncur added: "I feel the red card was harsh. Okay, a yellow for the tackle that started it all, but all I was trying to was to lift the lad up from the ground.

"I was trying to help the fellow up. I said, 'come on mate, up you get' and then a fellow ran in and nutted me. It's all gone off from there. I could have rolled about on the floor and got him sent off. I feel it was a bit harsh. He head-butted me."
