Monarch's Biggest Single Order.

It's a vertical-spindle traveling-column gantry machining center design from Monarch's joint venture with Holland's Unisign, B.V., and it will be built at the Monarch Machine Tool plant in upstate New York before being shipped to a Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control plant in Arkansas. The March order, the largest for a single machine in the builder's history, combines with solid bookings in February so that the two-month total is greater than half the total booked in 1999.

Company president Wayne Hanna, who led a management buyout from Genesis Worldwide Inc. (Dayton, Ohio) in early February, is anxious to publicize the news. Before the buyout, done with Cygnus Management Group (Syracuse, N.Y.), Genesis, having shed its Sidney, Ohio, lathe plant, made moves to signal the future of Monarch had been in question. With the ownership transfer, "the sign of relief was almost audible," according to Hanna, "and our productivity in the first two months has been outstanding."
