Molecular Weight Detector.

The miniDAWN[R] Tristar[TM] is a low-cost, light scattering instrument for absolute polymer and biopolymer characterization. The unit can be coupled to any HPLC system or used off-line in a micro-batch mode for determining absolute molecular weights and sizes of polymers directly, without resorting to column calibration or reference standards. The Tristar is built with a 30mW GaAs laser and, by optimizing the instrument's read head and the spatial characteristics of the laser beam, the unit has three times the signal-to-noise of the previous 20mW-based instruments. The unit has been adapted to fit inside of a high-temperature chromatograph in order to determine the absolute masses of samples which are only soluble at elevated temperatures. An autocorrelator option enables the Tristar to be connected to a dynamic light scattering instrument to determine the diffusion coefficients "on the fly". With this interface the user has the ability to size very small molecules eluting from a chromatograph.
