Mold-release agents: product lines reviewed.
Offers a full line of lubricant powder, pellet, and liquid dispersions, which can function as slip and antiblock agents, mold releases, pigment dispersants, and gloss modifiers. They can be compounded with other additives as required.
ADELL PLASTICS, INC.
Proprietary concentrates of silicone fluids are available for all thermoplastic materials. The concentrates are said to improve mold release, reduce overall cycle time, reduce rejects, and improve part wear and bearing properties. Company also offers multifunctional concentrates.
AIR PRODUCTS AND CHEMICALS INC.
Manufactures and markets water-based external release agents that are said to allow excellent release and reduced build-up on molds, and eliminate VOC emissions.
AIRTECH INTERNATIONAL INC.
Offers user-friendly and environmentally safe external release agents that contain no silicone or CFCs, low VOCs, and are not red label. Products usable at up to 800 F include Release All 70 (quick air-dry), Release All 40 (multiple use), and Release All 150 (mold sealer).
AKZO CHEMICALS INC.
Company's Interstab G-8257, an additive-type internal mold-release agent, is for use in a number of polymer applications. FDA-approved, its physical properties include a melting point of 288-295 F, specific gravity of 0.97 at 77 F, and a flash point of 545 F.
In rigid PVC, Interstab G-8257 improves the melt-flow characteristics of a formulation and yields products with reportedly good surface finish, color and physical properties. In flexible PVC and plastisols, G-8257 may be used at levels of 0.20-1.50 phr to provide good external lubrication or mold-release properties.
Armoslip slip agents reportedly add not only slip and antiblock characteristics, but also serve as internal mold releases. Products are said to speed molding and extrusion, and give products a smooth surface, high gloss, and close conformity to mold details. These high-molecular-weight fatty acid amides dissolve in resins at processing temperatures but migrate to the surface of finished products as the resins cool.
AKZO ENGINEERING PLASTICS
Offers silicone concentrates in 15-20% loadings for use with ABS, acetal, nylon 6, 66, and 612, polycarbonate, PBT polyester, PP, PE, PS and SAN.
Company also produces Wil-Lube concentrates of stearates or other lubricants in a multipurpose resin compatible with a variety of thermoplastics, including vinyls, polyolefins, styrenics, acrylics, cellulosics, polyesters and nylons. They are nonstaining, noncorrosive, and low in volatility.
ALKARIL CHEMICALS INC.
Produces a complete line of plastic lubricants and release agents, trademarked Alkalube. The line includes glyceryl, simple, and complete esters that function as internal, external, or intermediate lubricants and flow modifiers for rigid PVC, polycarbonates, phenolics, acrylics, and nylons.
Company's A-C polyethylenes and co-polymers are low-molecular-weight, ethylene-based polymers that can be used as lubricants, flow modifiers, release aids, and dispersion aids. Products reportedly improve the release properties of thermoplastic resins, increase output, improve the surface quality of the finished product, control melt temperature, increase thermal stability, reduce machine torque, and decrease power consumption. In addition, the products are said to have the ability to wet and disperse inert materials, such as pigments, carbon black, flame retardants, and fillers.
Produces specialty lubricant concentrates for most thermoplastics. These concentrates reportedly improve wear resistance and mold release, reduce war-page and rejects, lower material and energy costs, make finishing easier, and reduce tool wear. They are available in cubes, pellets or as powders, and are offered alone or in a multifunctional concentrate incorporating other additives and colors are specified.
AXEL PLASTICS RESEARCH LABORATORIES INC.
Mold Wiz internal molding lubricants contain no silicone, no wax and no stearates. These nonexuding additives are mixed directly into thermoplastics, thermosets and rubbers at levels of 0.1-1% by weight. Spray-on releases, flow marks and buildup are eliminated. Resin flow is said to be increased with better surface wetting; faster cycles at lower temperatures and antistatic properties are also reported benefits. Molds remain clean; no solvent vapors are released to the atmosphere. Molded parts are ready for painting, bonding or metallizing without degreasing. A full line of Mold Wiz products is offered, some of which are FDA-approved.
BASF CORP. CHEMICALS DIV.
Offers its new line of polyethylene and montan waxes called Luwax, which are designed for use as lubricating, wetting and mold-release agents, as well as dispersants for pigments and fillers. According to the company, the Luwax line is compatible with a wide variety of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), nylon, polycarbonate and ABS. The products can be extruded, injection and blow molded. In extrusion they reportedly allow for control over plastication time and maximum torque. They are also said to reduce tack and improve gloss of finished products. When used in film processes, these waxes reportedly reduce tack without affecting film transparency and do not plate out.
Manufactures a complete line of external release agents, primarily for injection molding, but including compression molding, extrusion and RIM.
Company also manufactures a broad range of paintable and silicone-based products. Silicone materials run from very light-duty film-forming sprays to heavy products specifically designed for rigid polyurethane foams. In addition, the paintable release agents are available as dry, lecithin-based lubricants, as well as light-duty and heavy-duty paintable releases. All products are available in aerosol packages or in 5-gal or 55-gal bulk containers.
CEARA PRODUCTS, INC.
Offers mold-release waxes made from refined No. 1 carnauba wax. Company's process to compound carnauba into mold-release products uses no acid or borax additives, and no silicone, acetate or parafin fillers. Because of the process, build-up is said to be reduced and color transfer eliminated.
Waxes are thoroughly cured before shipment and ready for immediate use in applications for fiber-reinforced plastic, cultured marble, and polymer concrete.
Chemstat HTSA-1 and HTSA-3 are specially synthesized nitrogenous organic compounds designed for use in most thermoplastics as mold-release additives, and slip and antiblocking agents.
Chemstat HTSA-1 is used as an additive to impart improved mold-release properties in polypropylene film. It provides slip and antiblocking characteristics at low use levels (0.05-0.50%) for extrusion of film and sheet.
Chemstat HTSA-3, a white free-flowing powder, is effective in a variety of thermoplastic resins such as cellulosics, polyolefins, PVC and nylons. It can reportedly be incorporated into high-clarity thermoplastic film without impairing optical properties. Film subjected to high-humidity environmental tests remains clear with no evidence of slip additive plate-out. HTSA-3 is effective at low use levels--0.05-0.40%.
Manufactures and services a complete line of external mold-release agents that include water-based and CFC-free products for flexible and rigid polyurethanes, reinforced polyester, rotomolding, thermosets and thermoplastics molding. Company's Perma-Mold releases are designed specifically for rigid urethane foam. Mono-Coat semi-permanent products can double mold productivity while giving multiple releases. Release does not build up on the mold and does not transfer to the part. Company also can custom formulate releases for specific applications.
CRODA UNIVERSAL, INC.
Company's Crodamide family of fatty-acid amide lubricant additives is specifically designed to improve mold release in PE, PP, PET, PS, PVC, nylon, and other specialty engineering resins.
Offers three grades of low-build-up, spray-on mold-release agents available in 16-oz cans. An all-purpose silicone grade provides dependable performance for most applications at an economical price. A premium silicone grade is available for tougher sticking problems and is FDA-approved for food industry applications. The third grade, a paintable mold release, is available for parts to be painted, plated or hot-stamped. Silicone-free, this grade is suitable for use with PS and most other resins.
DEXTER ADHESIVES & STRUCTURAL MATERIALS--FREKOTE DIV.
Manufactures a complete line of semi-permanent external release agents. Frekote releasing interfaces polymerize and chemically bond to the mold to form a micro-thin film. Products do not transfer to the molded part, provide multiple releases per application, and are thermally stable at high molding temperatures. CFC-free, solvent-based products available are:
* Frekote 44-NC for molding epoxy, polyester, polyethylene and polycarbonate.
* Frekote 700-NV--an easy-to-use, all-purpose release, which works well for most rubber and plastic applications.
* Frekote FRP-NC--a high-gloss release for molding polyester boats, tubs, shower stalls, cultured marble products and high-temperature thermoplastics such as PEEK.
* Frekote B-15, which seals microporosity on composite and aluminum tooling.
* Frekote BGS, which seals macroporosity on monolithic graphite tooling.
Newly introduced is Aqualine C-200, a water-based semi-permanent release agent formulated for use in aerospace/nonaerospace composite applications. Product offers the same multiple releases per application, non-contaminating transfer, and high thermal stability as the solvent-based Frekote products. It also contains no CFCs, very low VOC of less than 300 mg/liter, and no chlorinated, aromatic or petroleum-based solvents.
DOW CORNING CORP.
Compounded in small amounts into a resin system, silicone fluids, such as Dow Corning 200 Fluid, reduce friction and wear of parts fabricated of most thermoplastics and increase their load-speed capabilities. The same additives reportedly improve release without spray-on release agents, facilitate automatic operation, and increase output rates. Additional benefits are said to include reduced warpage, fewer rejects, and savings in release-agent costs.
DU PONT CO.
Manufactures Vydax fluorotelomer dispersions, used as external mold-release agents and dry lubricants. Product is used extensively in the molding of rubber and plastics parts. It is said to be virtually unaffected by either mold materials or mold products, even those made of difficult-to-release materials such as epoxy resins. Six grades are available, differing mainly in their active ingredient content, molecular weight and dispersity in water. The low molecular weight of Vydax imparts lubricity, thermal and chemical stability, nonflammability, and antistick and release properties, which maintain integrity in a broad range of operating conditions. Vydax is clean and nonmigrating, and comes in 30-gal drums, 5-gal pails and 1-gal cans. (See also Lubricants and Processing Aids.)
EASTMAN CHEMICAL PRODUCTS
Epolene waxes, low-molecular-weight polyolefins and glycerol monostearates, are offered as extrusion lubricants for rigid PVC. They are also useful as processing and mold-release lubricants for such polymers as ABS, polyesters, polycarbonates, nylons, polybutylenes and PE.
EMERY GROUP DIV. HENKEL CORP.
Manufactures a wide range of glycerol fatty esters as either internal or external lubricants for PBT or PET polyesters and PVC formulations. Supplied in solid and liquid forms, these products are said to help increase production rates, reduce melt temperatures, and reduce power consumption.
Company also markets Emerwax 9380 erucamide. It provides slip/antiblock properties for use in PE and PP and may also be used as a mold-release agent. Products are said to exhibit good heat stability and exceptionally low odor.
Offers silicone mold-release additives for molded plastics.
PERCY HARMS CORP.
Manufactures over 20 external spray-on mold-release agents called Slide, which are CFC-free.
Company has a new heavy-duty, CFC-free release agent designed specifically to prevent crazing or blemishes on polycarbonates. Called Polycarbonate 41412, it is odorless and can be used where parts are to be painted, hot-stamped or metallized. Maximum operating temperature is 600 F.

Offers a complete line of external mold releases in non-CFC aerosol cans, and also available in giant aerosol tanks, or as bulk concentrates for use with solvent carriers or compressed air. Silicone releases are stocked in various concentrations. Paintable releases include organic oil, water-soluble ester spray, Du Pont Vydax, dry PTFE, and zinc stearate.
LILLY-RAM INDUSTRIES SUB. OF LILLY INDUSTRIAL COATINGS
Offers two grades of internal release agents for unsaturated polyester compounds for FRP, one for steel molds, and one for aluminum or plastic tools.
Company's Acrawax C ethylene bistearamide wax additive is available in a wide range of particle sizes, including a dispersion grade. The product provides what is said to be an exceptional balance between internal and external lubricity, as well as release properties.
Glycolube esters (ranging from glycerol monostearates and oleates to pentaerythritol tetra-stearate) are also offered as internal lubricants and mold-release agents. (See also Lubricants and Processing Aids.)
Internal mold-release agents for PVC dispersions are available. These non-silicone liquids reportedly provide good release for a variety of mold compositions and designs without plateout or haziness in cured vinyl.
MALLINCKRODT INC. CHEMICAL DIV.
High-purity metallic stearates are supplied for use as internal/external lubricants in the following areas:
* Hy Dense Calcium Stearate HP granular and RSN powder for efficient rigid PVC pipe and PVC siding lubrication.
* Calcium Stearate RSN 248D for clean neutralization of residual catalysts in polyolefins.
* Magnesium Stearate RSN 1-1 for lubricating all ABS resins.
* Zinc Stearate RSN 131 HS for superior clarity/color stability in crystal PS.
* Hy Dense Zinc Stearate XM powder for low viscosity and good mold release in polyester SMC and BMC.
* Hy Dense Zinc Ultrafine as a dispersion, and for color concentrates.
GEORGE MANN & CO.
Offers its Aqualease 2802 water-based external mold release for polyurethanes. It reportedly eliminates break-in problems common to water-based release agents. A proprietary emulsion in Aqualease 2802 eliminates sticking problems, which can happen during the first few cycles because of urethane build-up on the mold surface. The need to season molds with silicone greases or other substances is eliminated, resulting in faster start-ups.
Ease Release and Permalease are a complete line of topical and semi-permanent release agents and coatings. Ease Release 200 and 300 are topical release agents for urethane and epoxy casting and molding. Permalease 3000 and 3500 are semi-permanent coatings for rubber, polyester, and epoxy composites. Permalease 2264 is for urethane HR foam and urethane elastomers where nontransfer and multiple release is needed.

MERIX CHEMICAL CO.
Mold-Ease PCR liquid external release agent can be used in very small amounts (0.01-0.05%). It is said to be nonflammable, odor- and color-free and to contain no silicones, so that products can be painted, printed, or metallized without costly wash-up operations.
M. MICHEL AND CO. INC.
Cachalot Plastics Additive S-53T3 is a higher-alcohol-based extrusion, casting, and calendering aid designed primarily for flexible PVC to prevent plastic from sticking to molds and dies.
PARK CHEMICAL CO.
Offers a complete line of release agents for polyurethane molding, including conventional solvent-based and water-based agents for flexible, semi-rigid, rigid, integral skin, pour-in-place, microcellular, and RIM foams. Custom-designed products are available for specialty applications, including automotive modular glass, steering wheels and interior trim.
PETROLITE SPECIALTY POLYMERS GROUP
Manufactures microcrystalline waxes and synthetic polymers as lubricants, mold-release agents, dispersing aids in color concentrates, nucleating agents (EPS), and antiblocks (PP film) for thermoplastic resins. Microcrystalline waxes are derived from petroleum and are high-molecular-weight mixtures of straight and branched-chain hydrocarbons with melting points from 170 to 200 F. Many are suitable for food contact.
Company offers Polywax PE waxes: low-molecular-weight, high-density, crystalline polymers. Melting points range from 185 to 260 F. Many reportedly meet FDA requirements and have been used to improve EPS appearance, and to optimize cost/performance of rigid PVC pipe. Zylac lubricants for rigid PVC may lower the cost per linear foot of pipe and profile extrusions.
Vybar polymers are low-melting (125-165 F) hydrocarbons used as modifiers for paraffin wax, as mold-release agents, and as lubricants in rigid PVC.
POLY COMPOUNDS INC.
Offers a water-based external mold release said to provide good demolding efficiency. The release, a hydro-alcoholic solution of saponified fatty acids that produces a dry film on molded parts, works on a variety of substrates, including unsaturated polyester, epoxies, and rigid or elastomeric urethanes. If post-mold finishing requires removal of the release, it can be taken off simply by rinsing with water.
Provides specialty additive concentrates in powder or pellet form:
* RZ40 is recommended for nylons, ABS and PS. It is said to develop excellent mold-release properties and lubrication at use levels of 0.5-1.0%.
* RE40 is for PP, PE and EVA, and reportedly functions to reduce mold sticking and improve part release at use levels of 0.5-1.0%.
ROGER A. REED INC.
Manufactures synthetic wax internal lubricants and mold releases.
REED PLASTICS DIV. SANDOZ CHEMICALS CORP.
Offers custom-formulated mold-release concentrates for thermoplastics. Also available are multifunctional concentrates containing both mold release and colorants. Concentrates are available in powdered or pellet form.
SHEREX CHEMICAL CO.
Offers various fatty acid, alcohol, and amide lubricants. Hydrofol fatty acids are used as internal and external lubricants and mold-release agents in PVC, ABS, phenolics, polyesters, and PS. Adol fatty alcohols and Adogen fatty amides are also used as internal and external lubricants.
SPECIALTY PRODUCTS CO.
Offers a broad line of external mold-release agents/lubricants for reinforced-plastics molders. Internal release/lubricant processing aids for layup, SMC, BMC and pultrusion eliminate the need for costly application prior to molding. Company has introduced a new system of semi-permanent releases and mold sealers for RTM, filament winding and press molding.
Offers a line of release agents to prevent adhesion in casting and molding. Synlube 531, 1000, 449 and 1711 represent the product line that ranges from a wax base to silicones.
SYNTHETIC PRODUCTS CO.
A complete line of Synpro metallic stearate lubricants is offered with grades tailored for specific plastics applications: for PVC (flexible and rigid), Synpro-Flo 15F and Synpro-Flo 92, which are said to be easily dispersed, low-dusting, high-bulk, granular products; for HDPE and LLDPE, Synpro-Flo 91; and for PP, Synpro-Flo 91. Offers its Thermolube line of processing-aid concentrates for use with all thermoplastics, from PS to PPS. Advantages are said to include faster cycle times, better mold release, lower energy consumption due to lower stock temperatures, and cycle-time reductions of over 10%. Products are also reported to be more economical than aerosol spray release agents.
TIODIZE CO., INC.
Offers Tiolon X20, a high-performance PTFE external mold-release agent and lubricant for use in injection molding applications. The product dries in minutes and increases service life; and there is no transfer or build-up. It is translucent in color with a very thin film thickness of 0.0002 to 0.0007 in., and is fluid, chemical, abrasion, and corrosion resistant. Tiolon X20 can also be used to lubricate anodized aluminum by impregnating the oxide layer, which reportedly extends wear life and provides excellent release characteristics. Product is supplied in aerosol or bulk form.
UNION CARBIDE CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CO., INC.
Manufactures silicone fluids in a range of viscosities, plus organomodified fluids. Both are used as internal lubricants and mold releases for thermoplastics. A typical product is company's L-45, used at viscosities of 10,000 to 60,000 cst.
Silicone fluids reduce coefficient of friction, improve wear resistance, and may improve surface appearance and gloss of molded parts. They also provide lower melt viscosity, resulting in better mold fill-out and reduced cycle times in injection molding. They are reported to be excellent internal mold releases, reducing or eliminating the need for externally applied mold-release agents.
WACKER SILICONES CORP.
Offers a broad range of external silicone release agents that provide defect-free surfaces for better quality and low rejection rates. Features include temperature stability, low surface tension, and uniform wetting on a variety of mold surfaces. Products provide multiple releases and excellent shelf life, says the company. WITCO CORP. HUMKO CHEMICAL DIV.
Offers the following as internal mold-release additives:
* Kemamide E, S, B and U primary fatty amides for use in PE, PP, PS, PVC, PU and elastomers as mold-release, slip and antiblocking agents.
* Hystrene fatty acids recommended as mold-release agents and lubricants in PS.
* Atmos 150, Atmul 84 and Dimul S food-grade, mold-release, antistatic and antifogging agents for use in polyolefins and PVC.
* Moldpro series of internal mold-release agents and processing aids for use in polyolefins, engineering resins and elastomers.
ZENITH CUTTER CO.
Offers chemical release agents. Mold releases are available for uses ranging from light-duty to heavy-duty. Company also offers lubricants, rust preventatives, cleaners, and miscellaneous products. Bulk quantities are available for some releases.
