Twenty-nine papers from the November 2014 symposium address an unmet need for characterization and standardized testing related to the tapered connections used in modular joint replacement implant systems. The contributors propose design parameters for taper connections and methodologies for testing tapers both during the design process and after removal from a patient. The biological response to the implants receives some attention as well, particularly local tissue reaction to corrosion products, metallic ionic complexes, and metal debris.
