Modelo continues market expansion in Latin America

The Modelo Brewing Group has started exporting Corona beer to countries in the Caribbean Basin and Central America, continuing its expansion into the major markets of the world, the company has announced.

The moves signal the beginning of a major thrust by Modelo into Latin America, according to Valentin Diez, Modelo's senior vice president of sales and marketing.

Diez reported that shipments to Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and military bases in Puerto Rico had begun in August.

Until these shipments began, Modelo's only Latin American exports were to U.S. bases in Panama. Distribution was limited by production capacity until two new breweries were built in the 1980s, Diez said. Modelo now owns seven Mexican breweries.
