Mobiles: Making Art that Moves.

Mobiles: Making Art That Moves. Educational Dimensions Corp., Randora House/McGraw Hill, 11 W. 19th St., 2nd floor, New York, NY 10011. Two filmstrips, two audio cassettes, one teacher's guide. $84.00 per set.

This set of filmstrips introduces students to the history of the development of mobiles as well as the basic techniques of construction. Students will get an important sense of the key interaction between craft, design and aesthetics. Part I (60 frames) introduces students to the concepts of mobile art with particular emphasis on the important contributions of Alexander Calder and other major artists who worked within this art form. At the same time, they are also encouraged to open up their own minds, to discover what motion in art can mean to them. Part II (60 frames) emphasizes basic facts about Alexander Calder's life and his place in the context of modern art; defines the meaning of mobile sculpture; stresses the meaning of biomorphic and geometric forms; and helps students place mobile sculpture within the context of contemporary art.

This program is well produced and recommends instruction related to this very important twentieth-century art form. It is easily adapted to units of studies at all levels and is especially suited to middle through high school art classes.
