Mobile phone subscriptions rise 1% to 69.16 mil.

TOKYO, July 6 Kyodo

The number of subscriptions to mobile phone and personal handy-phone system (PHS) services in Japan stood at 69.16 million as of June 30, up 1.0% from a month earlier, the Telecommunications Carriers Association said Friday.

The pace of growth is flattening out, with subscriptions rising by around 1% for the second straight month after increasing 2.3% in March, the industry group said.

Subscriptions to Internet service providers via mobile phones, such as NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s popular i-mode Internet-capable service, exceeded 40 million by rising 4.4% to 40.37 million.

The number of subscriptions to mobile phone and PHS services topped 60 million at the end of March.
