Mobile calls to be cheaper by 23%.

T HE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( Trai) slashed ceiling tariffs for national roaming on Thursday which will lead to a 23- per cent fall in call charges and a 40- per cent reduction in text messaging rates benefiting millions of mobile phone users travelling outside their home circles.

" These changes will come into effect from May 1, 2015," the regulator said in a statement. Following the order, subscribers will not be able to avail of schemes that allowed them to make calls and send SMSs while in roaming in home circle rates.

The ceiling for outgoing local calls has been reduced to 80 paise per minute from ` 1 a minute and the cap for STD calls

to ` 1.15 per minute from ` 1.5 a minute for subscribers outside their home circles. The maximum charge for incoming calls on roaming cannot exceed 45 paise per minute, down from the ceiling of 75 paise while a maximum of 25 paise per minute will be charged for a local SMS sent as against ` 1 charged until now and to 38 paise per national SMS, down from ` 1.50.

Trai also mandated telcos to provide a special roaming tariff plan where incoming voice calls while on national roaming will be free and telcos may levy a fixed charge if any.
