RIYADH: The Culture and Arts Association in Riyadh has organized two musical courses to teach oud starting Muharram 15. These musical courses have been organized by the association since its establishment 44 years ago, said director of the association Sultan Al-Bazei. In September last year, the association announced that it was organizing a course in Arabic musical scales in Riyadh. It triggered a debate among users of social media networks, with some upset and others supportive of the idea of such a course that supports musical talent. The course covers several aspects, including explaining the correct way to hold the oud and the reed, as well as providing an explanation and analysis of all musical scales and practical rehearsals with the instructor, an explanation of all techniques, speed and time, and finally, training participants to play some musical pieces and songs using the oud, said Al-Bazei. One course lasts six weeks, with an average of two lectures per week, each lasting two hours, starting at 8 p.m. The other course, teaching "solfege", will start on the 23 of Muharram, and will be provided by instructor Khalil Almuel. It will present an overview of music and its basics, teach about the psychological effects of music, and give a detailed explanation of the musical scales to help identify oriental music and its branches, in addition to exercises and practical rehearsals to develop performance. The course will last for five weeks, with on average two lectures a week, each lasting two hours, starting at 8 p.m. The director of the association in Riyadh, Abdulaziz Al-Zahrani, said that these courses are part of the musical committee's activities for the year 1438H, as a result of a great deal of attention from those interested in music. Al-Zahrani said "the association was keen to continue these courses this year", adding that registration is open and those interested in joining should visit the association's headquarters.
