Missouri dental hygienists' association (MDHA) annual Lobby Day February 13, 2013.

During the MDHA Lobby Day, Senator Ron Richard (R) from Joplin, Mo., presented a special proclamation from the Missouri Senate to Tia Strait, RDH, EdD, dean of the School of Health Sciences, Public Safety and Technology at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU). The proclamation recognized Strait as a heroine for her work following the catastrophic Joplin tornado on May 22, 2011. Recognizing the immediate need for emergency responders, Strait opened up an emergency medical clinic at MSSU, which was in operation within three hours after the tornado hit. Strait, along with Dental Hygiene Program Director Debbi Gerecke, RDH, MA and other department heads helped lead the efforts. "Whoever thought that two dental hygienists would be operating an emergency medical clinic?" asked Strait upon receiving the recognition.
