Mirabilis chasing more yen for Godolphin team; Around the World: JAPAN.

ANNUS MIRABILIS, third to Sunrise Flag in the Group 2 Naruo Kinen over a mile and a quarter at Hanshin on Sunday, could remain in Japan for the Group 1 Takarazuka Kinen, over an extra furlong of the same course, on July 12.

Norihiro Yokoyama had the mount on Annus Mirabilis, who added pounds 74,349 to the Godolphin coffers. The six-year-old, who was second favourite at 5.6-1, led into the straight but could not hold the strong run of the 46.4-1 Sunrise Flag.

Backers considered the race an easy task for 3-10 shot Air Groove, who became the first filly to be voted Horse of the Year since 1971 after running Pilsudski to three-quarters of a length in the Japan Cup. But the daughter of Tony Bin took a long time to wear down Annus Mirabilis for second and was too late to worry the three-length winner, who had never competed at this level before.

Sunrise Flag, who is trained by Isao Yasuda and was ridden by his son, Yasuhiko, is a four-year-old by the Roberto horse Real Shadai, eighth on the list of leading sires in Japan last year.
