Mirabilis chasing more yen for Godolphin team; Around the World: JAPAN.
Norihiro Yokoyama had the mount on Annus Mirabilis, who added pounds 74,349 to the Godolphin coffers. The six-year-old, who was second favourite at 5.6-1, led into the straight but could not hold the strong run of the 46.4-1 Sunrise Flag.
Backers considered the race an easy task for 3-10 shot Air Groove, who became the first filly to be voted Horse of the Year since 1971 after running Pilsudski to three-quarters of a length in the Japan Cup. But the daughter of Tony Bin took a long time to wear down Annus Mirabilis for second and was too late to worry the three-length winner, who had never competed at this level before.
Sunrise Flag, who is trained by Isao Yasuda and was ridden by his son, Yasuhiko, is a four-year-old by the Roberto horse Real Shadai, eighth on the list of leading sires in Japan last year.
