Minute Masterclass: Daniela Turley.
How to keep glowing through the party season
With mulled wine and mince pie fests looming ever closer, we asked medical herbalist Daniela Turley how we can stop our complexions going to pot this Christmas.
`When clients ask me why my skin looks so good at this time of year, I tell them it's because I look after my liver and keep my vitamins up. When you're drinking almost every night, you can quickly become vitamin- deficient, especially if your diet isn't as balanced as usual. Alcohol inhibits the body's ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, most of which affect the skin, by hindering the production of digestive enzymes in the liver, so your complexion can start to suffer quickly.
`Vitamin K is involved in your blood-clotting function - without it, you bruise more easily. Acne sufferers will notice more break outs than usual if their bodies aren't absorbing enough Vitamin A - the skin needs a plentiful supply to heal and repair itself. Alcohol also reduces zinc stores and depleted levels are closely associated with eczema and acne.
`Take a daily antioxidant supplement with added zinc and alpha-lipoic acid (which protects liver membranes) - try Solgar Sulphur Antioxidant Complex (pounds 15.75). A dandelion and milk thistle supplement, such as Farmacia Hangover Elixir, pounds 6.95 (0870-111 8123), before and after going out will aid the regeneration of liver cells and protect from further damage.'
