Ministry drafting law for identification.

The Ministry of Interior is drafting a law on Population Density, Identification and Population Density Statistics to fulfil international obligations.

It serves specifically to ensure the registration of births, deaths, marriages and other population density-related data in Cambodia, a summary released after a closed-door meeting at the Interior Ministry on Tuesday said.

The summary was made after a meeting, the second, between ministry officials and the committee of Population Density, Identification and Population Density Statistics.

It shows that primary goals of the draft are to create the legal conditions necessary to establish a reliable and effective system to identifying every Cambodian living in the country and to conduct a census for planning purposes.

Minister of Interior Sar Keng, who presided over the meeting, said the task ahead is a huge challenge for the government.

'We worry about it. I have noticed that specifying the identification of every individual is a challenging undertaking for the government."

'But it needs to be completed because very soon, everyone will need to move from one place to another,' he said.
