Miller may cut up to 250 jobs.

Miller Brewing Co. may cut more than 250 salaried positions early next year in order to meet its reported goal of a 10-percent decrease in its workforce.

Already, 82 salaried workers have reached early retirement terms with the brewer, which are set to take effect December 1, a Miller spokesperson noted.

Miller's early retirement program is the first step in reaching its goal of significantly reducing its 3,500-member work force.

Additionally, the brewer has stopped filling some job vacancies, spokesperson Elizabeth Conlisk explained.

"We do anticipate that some layoffs will be necessary in early 1993," Conlisk told the Milwaukee Journal.

Conlisk also reported that Miller plans to cut 200 production positions each at its Fulton, NY, and Albany, GA, plants by early 1993. In the wake of those cuts, production volume will be shifted to its Eden, NC, and Trenton, OH, breweries "as part of our long-term strategy to improve cost competitiveness," Conlisk said.

The cuts come on the heels of Miller's 8.7-percent drop in third-quarter volume, along with a 42-percent decline third quarter operating income.
