Miller Brewing Co. picks 6 radio bands for regional & national spots

Six bands from the 1989 Miller Genuine Draft Band Network roster have been selected to record radio spots, Miller Brewing Co. officials have announced.

The bands selected are Grayghost, Ft. Smith, AR; The Bobby Friss Band, Tampa, FL; The Bonedaddys, Los Angeles, CA; Joe "King" Carrasco, Austin, TX; Johnny "Clyde" Copeland, Houston, TX; and the Dusters from Nashville, TN.

The Band Network, now in its ninth year, currently supports the tours of 27 multi-regional and national club level acts. In addition to the opportunity to appear in Miller commercials, the groups also receive promotional and publicity support from the company for all tour dates throughout the year.

According to Craig Connelly, manager of entertainment marketing, Miller Brewing Co., all 27 acts on the Band Network roster were given the opportunity to write and record their own version of Miller Genuine Draft's "Tap into the Cold" advertising campaign.

"We've got so many different styles of music involved with the Band Network and so many talented musicians that it makes sense for Genuine Draft to use that resource," Connelly said. "It gives us a variety of spots to choose from and provides additional exposure for some of our bands."

From a band's viewpoint, according to Bobby Friss, who also recorded a radio spot last year, the commercial exposure provides an excellent chance for a band on the road.

"If you don't have a huge reputation, promotion is very important and the commercial helps get your name out," Friss said. "Every time it runs, it's a commercial for Miller Genuine Draft and the Bobby Friss Band."

Each band will record a 60-second spot to be aired regionally, with some of the spots to be selected for national distribution, Connelly added.
